The Vilas County Sheriff's Department enforces all traffic laws on all highways, county roads, and town roads within the boundaries of Vilas County. Each patrol squad is equipped with radar units and video recorders. Laser traffic units are also available for deputies to use as an optional traffic enforcement tool.

The department recently purchased a Speed Measuring and Recording Trailer (SMART). The SMART unit is deployed in various area of the county to enforce speed limits. The unit is small and can be towed behind any squad car.

Locations of the SMART unit vary throughout the county. If you have a concern or would like to suggest a location for the SMART unit to be deployed, simply click on the link below. You can e-mail the Highway Safety Coordinator and let him know where you would like extra speed enforcement.

When passing the unit, you will see your speed compared to the speed limit. Just remember, at any given time, a deputy could be sitting just down the road monitoring the SMART unit.
